HEALTH ALERT

Image

We have have had two cases of head lice reported to us this week.  ALL parents are asked to please examine their child(ren) regularly.  Please be aware that in some cases a child with an active case may show no itching symptoms.  Lice can be detected by parting the hair and examining near the scalp, most commonly near ears and back of neck.  Also check along the length of the hair strands for attached nits that do not brush off.

Misdiagnosis of nits is very common so if you have concerns or are unfamiliar with what to look for/how to check, please consult your doctor or other professional for assistance.  There are several local places that provide services if you feel you need professional help checking your children or managing a current case.  While the school cannot promote any particular company, we do have the names of several that families have used.

If you discover head lice, please advise the school office.  Do not send your child back to school until they have had treatment and are louse free.  Successful treatment should kill crawling lice but nits often persist after treatment.  Please continue to check each child's scalp every night (even if nit free) for the next 14 days – including weekends.  Nits can take many days to hatch and re-infestation can occur if families stop doing combing and head checks too soon.

The largest impact of head lice comes not from the condition itself but from our reactions and emotions towards it. A case of head lice in a group setting can create an anxiety that is far greater than it should be relative to any health issue it poses.  While head lice are a nuisance, please remember that they are not a health hazard or responsible for the spread of any disease.

Thank you for your cooperation.
