PASTORAL REFLECTION Monsignor Peter J Vaghi |

|
| This week Little Flower parish school joins all the Catholic Schools across the Nation to celebrate once again National Catholic Schools Week. The theme for this year's observance is "Catholic Schools: Faith. Excellence. Service." This theme is so appropriate for it helps us more deeply understand that Jesus Christ is the reason for our faith, the basis of all excellence and the cause for our generous service. Moreover, it is a most fitting theme for our excellent twice-named National Blue Ribbon parish school. |

Saints as Model Stewards – May the saints whom we honor next week inspire us to use our own unique God-given talents and opportunities as He would have us do. Tuesday - St. John Bosco (d. 1888), a priest who used his talent to educate young boys who lived in poverty in Turin. He used juggling, music, games and dream-telling to attract his little flock. After many obstacles, he founded an Oratory to house the boys – soon numbering in the thousands. …may (we) show in our hearts and by our deeds both fraternal charity and the light of truth. (Tuesday's Prayer after Communion) Friday - St. Blaise, Bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, who was martyred there in 316. He worked tirelessly for the spiritual and physical well-being of his people. According to a popular legend, he saved a young man from choking on a fish bone. For this reason, he is patron of those with throat maladies, and Catholics have their throats blessed on his memorial day. Also on Friday – St. Ansgar (d. 865) was a French Benedictine who preached the Gospel in Scandinavia, where he baptized the Danish king. Later he was made abbot of a new monastery and Archbishop of Hamburg. Then as papal legate to Scandinavia, he made a second missionary trip, helped greatly by the recent conversion of the Swedish king. Stewardship of the Faith, a Lifetime of Learning – Many who have tried reading the profound works of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Dominican and Doctor of the Church whose memorial was yesterday) have found it a daunting task. An article in the daily email "The Catholic Thing" made some very helpful suggestions. "You could start with a good introduction, like G. K. Chesterton's The Dumb Ox or Ralph McInerny's delightful First Glance at Thomas Aquinas (A Handbook for Peeping Thomists). Or, if you like listening, you could go to the website of the International Catholic University and get Prof. McInerny's lively "Introduction to Thomas Aquinas (A Handbook for Peeping Thomists.) The article also recommended Prof. McInerny's online course "Introduction to Thomas Aquinas," six one-hour lectures offered by the International Catholic University (www.icucourses.com). "Do you want our Lord to give you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to give you few graces? Visit Him seldom." (St. John Bosco, whose memorial is on Tuesday) |
