| PASTORAL REFLECTION Deacon Don Longano |
Now that the Christmas Season has ended and we have recycled the Christmas tree, packed away the special ornaments, and returned to the 'daily grind' -- our responsibilities of work, school and other activities, hopefully we can retain the joy of the recent Christmas Season in our hearts. As we affirm in Sunday's Responsorial Psalm, "The Lord is my light and my salvation." |

Saints as Model Stewards – May the saints whom we honor this week inspire us to use our own unique God-given talents and opportunities as He would have us do. Monday - St. Vincent Saragossa was a Spanish deacon who was martyred in 304 during the Diocletian persecutions. He was starved and tortured in a vain attempt to have him recant his faith. Even today fellow Christians in some countries are being persecuted, and sometimes martyred. Please pray for them. Tuesday - St. Francis de Sales (d. 1622), a Doctor of the Church. As bishop of Geneva, he saw to the spiritual needs of everyone, from the poorest peasants to the ladies of the court. He won back to Catholicism over 30,000 Calvinists by his sermons, pamphlets, letters and two popular books. He is the patron of journalists and founder with St. Jane de Chantal of the Sisters of the Visitation. Thursday - Sts. Timothy and Titus, Christian converts who became close collaborators of St. Paul. Timothy helped found the Church in Corinth and was with Paul in Rome. Titus delivered Paul's sharply worded letter to the Corinthians and successfully smoothed things out between them and the disappointed Paul. Timothy and Titus used their God-given talents to do the work they were called to do. So should we. Friday – St. Angela Merici (d. 1540) founded the Ursulines, an order dedicated to teaching girls in an era when girls were not given educations. Originally, her "Company of St. Ursula" lived at home, took no formal vows, but were committed to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. They put their faith to work out of love for God and for the benefit of those who had less than they. Saturday – St. Thomas Aquinas (d. 304), the thirteenth century Dominican whose immense love and study of God led him to write Summa Theologica and many other profound treatises on the faith. As a student he was called "dumb ox" because his humility and quietness were taken as signs of dullness. But his teacher, Albertus Magnus, said, "We call this young man a dumb ox, but his bellowing in doctrine will one day resound throughout the world." St. Thomas Aquinas is a Doctor of the Church and the patron of Catholic schools. He realized the Dominican ideal – to contemplate and to given to others the fruits of contemplation. "Finally, I humbly ask - pray for me, so that the Lord may admit me to the eternal dwellings, despite all my sins and shortcomings. For all those entrusted to me, my heartfelt prayer goes out day after day." This was the last paragraph of recently deceased Pope Emeritus Benedict's Spiritual Testament, a document written by each Pope and released after his death. This one-page Testament can be read at: The Spiritual Testament of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI - Vatican News |
