PASTORAL REFLECTION Deacon Don Longano |
Last weekend our parish celebrated the feast of St. Therese of Lisieux, or St. Therese of the Child Jesus, the Little Flower. During her life on earth, St. Therese had an abiding faith, and deeply understood the meaning of the endless love of God; and she continuously intercedes for us as a saint in heaven. Pope John Paul II named St. Therese a Doctor of the Church, meaning that her sanctity and writings have had a profoundly beneficial influence on the faithful. Her writings provide us deep insight to assist our spiritual journeys. |

| | OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH Little Flower's Respect Life Committee is organizing an online October Baby Bottle Campaign to raise funds for Shady Grove Pregnancy Center. Shady Grove Pregnancy provides compassionate support, free services, material items and life affirming options to women faced with unplanned pregnancies. During the month of October, the Church asks us to reflect more deeply on the dignity of every human life. Kindly consider making a donation using our secure online form by clicking below. |

The Lives of Saints – The lives of saints are inspiring, so if you would like some spiritual nourishment from their examples while you drive, jog or walk try downloading podcasts on saints' lives and other related subjects at www.saintcast.org. You do not, of course, have to be a multitasker, and could benefit greatly by quietly giving the individual podcasts your full attention. Among the 140 podcasts currently available on the lives of individual saints, there are also some with intriguing titles, such as "must We Believe in Miracles?," "Aquinas for Dummies," Mortification and Why Saints Do It" and (one with a seasonal Halloween title) "Saintly Ghost Story, John Bosco." Time and Talent – If you are a lawyer and would like to learn more about how you can make your pro-bono services available to the Network, please phone James D. Bishop, Esq., at (202) 772-4300. Saints as Model Stewards – May the saints whom we commemorate this week inspire us to use our own God-given talents and opportunities as He would have us do. Tuesday – St. John XXIII was born to a poor sharecropper's family, went on to become known as "Good Pope John" because of his warmth and kindness to the sick, the poor, the prisoners, and to all. As Archbishop Roncalli during World War II, his interventions saved the lives of thousands of Jews, which caused Israel to declare him "A Righteous Gentile." As pope, perhaps his most notable decision was his convening of Vatican II. His memorial on October 11 marks the 60th anniversary of the opening of the Council. Friday – St. Callistus, a former slave who became pope! He was an outstanding defender of Catholic teaching, while making necessary changes in penitential practices and marriage law. He was martyred (from the Latin martus, meaning witness) in about 222. May we too be faithful witnesses. Saturday – The great St. Teresa of Avila (d. 1582), Doctor of the Church, started more than 40 foundations of "strict observance Carmelites." This woman of action and contemplation wrote several books that are considered spiritual classics. |

ATTENTION TAX and FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS Five years ago, Catholic Charities launched the Financial Stability Network (FSN). During this period, FSN has recruited over 200 volunteers to help lower income families and individuals in the Archdiocese of Washington achieve their specific financial goals. We have superb group of tax and financial professionals who work together with good natured camaraderie and total commitment but we need a few more dedicated volunteers to keep up with the growing demand. If you are interested in joining the FSN team, or know someone who would be a good fit, please reach out to Deacon Jim Shanahan, Director of FSN, at jim.shanahan@cc-dc.org or 202-772-4310. |
