| PASTORAL REFLECTION Deacon Don Longano |
"For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted." (Luke 14:11.) Jesus, in His powerful words from Sunday's Gospel passage, teaches us the paramount importance of approaching Him with the correct disposition, a humble heart. Through our deeply reverential, virtuous and open hearts we receive the endless gifts of love and grace offered by Christ. So nurtured by God's gifts, we can show our love for God and neighbor. |

| First Friday Devotion - Next Friday September 2, being the first Friday in September, the parish will, as is customary, host a Holy Hour and Benediction immediately following the noon Mass. If you want to deepen your spiritual participation during this devotion, check out the following online link: 4 Practical Tips for a More Fruitful Time In Adoration - St. Joseph's Shelf (stjosephshelf.com) Saints as Model Stewards - The Church has only one saint on its calendar this week, and what a giant he was. St. Gregory the Great (d. 604) was the first to call himself "the servant of the servants of God." He distributed his family's wealth and became a Benedictine monk - and then became the first monk to be elected Pope. "Perhaps it is not after all so difficult for a man to part with his possessions, but it is certainly most difficult for him to part with himself. To renounce what one has is a minor thing; but to renounce what one is, that is asking a lot." (St.Gregory's "Homilies on the Gospel.") St. Gregory promoted the chant which is identified with him – Gregorian Chant. "For the law of Christ is Charity, since it has from Him bountifully bestowed on us its good things and has patiently borne our evil things. We, therefore, fulfill by imitation the law of Christ, when we both kindly bestow our good things, and piously endure the evil done by our friends." (St. Gregory the Great whose memorial is on Saturday.) |
